Why is WordPress so popular?

WordPress powers over 30% of the web. The reason it is so popular is because it is a very cost effective solution for building your website. WordPress is open source software, which means it is freely available and is constantly being developed as a content management system. It has an array of free and premium themes on offer which will allow you to install a good looking design and add your content with little effort.

Why does WordPress suffer from being hacked?

Being so popular WordPress also comes under a lot of attacks from different hack attempts. You can however; combat this by having a secure server, keeping the framework and plugins up to date and run security software on your WordPress website. Many people think they can just set a website up and not worry about managing the software or installation. This is OK until something goes wrong. If you invest in a good managed WordPress hosting service with a maintenance program you should be quite safe, as this solution will almost always have a daily backup of your website.

Are free WordPress themes any good?

I would say that there are some good free themes out there but they are few and far between. Not many developers want to give away their work for nothing. Most of the free themes developed are usually limited in resources and try to get you to purchase the premium version for more functionality. Unfortunately some free themes are developed by unscrupulous developers and they will hide malicious code within the theme. I would suggest that if you are looking for a theme based WordPress website go check out Theme Forest. The investment is well worth it but check that the theme is actively under future development for updates etc.

Can WordPress be used for any website?

As a rule yes, WordPress can be used to power content managed areas of a website and for the majority of websites it will be the only framework you require. However some technologies and functionality will work better using other formats, especially if it is a bespoke piece of software that you are running on your website. You would need to hire a professional developer and they would be able to advise on the best way forward.

What are the benefits of using WordPress?

WordPress has many benefits. It's free (open source), easy to use and update your web content, has numerous plugins to increase functionality at little or no cost, and is one of the easiest platforms to kick start your SEO efforts with a number of helpful plugins.
